February 3rd Kane had surgery for his circumcision revision at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. We had to be there at 7:15 that morning. I had a strict feeding schedule I had to go by so he had his last milk bottle at 12 am that morning. He woke up again around 4:30 and I gave him some apple juice. He couldn't have anything to eat or drink after 5:30 that morning. After having to call dad to come over and jump off the Tahoe and being stuck in some traffic, we made it there on time! We didn't have to wait very long in the waiting room before getting checked in and getting all our bracelets on. Around 8:30 we were called back to our pre-op room. There, we put on these cute little PJ's and just hung around answering questions and waiting around for his procedure time.
I didn't realize that our procedure time wasn't until 10:20. He started getting restless and I just knew we were about to have a melt down for a bottle. I walked him around the floor for a little bit until my arms got tired and I passed him off to Ryan. He fell asleep in Ryan's arms and took a little cat nap.
I was a nervous wreck the day before the surgery. I would cry at the drop of a hat and was just extremely stressed out. I wasn't nervous about the procedure but I was about the anesthesia. The day of the surgery my nerves were quickly pushed to the side by being there and talking to the staff. Everyone was happy and made sure that all the t's were crossed and i's dotted. I probably answered the same questions 5 different times. We spoke to the nurse, anesthesia nurse practitioner, Humphrey the Anesthesiologist, Dr. Tanaka and the resident who was in the operating room with her, Dr. Joshi. Even the CNO came down to make a visit (only because Ryan works with her brother) but still she didn't have to come check on us and make sure everything was going well. By the time they came to get him I was comfortable letting him go because I knew my baby was in good hands! The OR nurse and CRNA came to get him and we watched them carry him down the hall. We waved at him as he watched us over her shoulder. We quickly made our way to the cafeteria afterwards since the car trouble and traffic left us without time for breakfast.
We scarfed down some Taco Bell and made our way back up. We didn't wait very long, maybe 30 or 45 minutes, before we got a call to the podium. We were taken to a private room to wait on the doctor to tell us how the procedure went. Dr. Tanaka said that his procedure went as planned and that there were no complications. She told us that we would be able to see him shortly. About 10-15 minutes later we were on our way back to the PACU to see him. Once we got back there he was just then starting to wake up. He was a little wild but I quickly picked him up and rocked him. She made us 8 ounces of an apple juice/pedialyte mixture.
His poor little IV was in his foot.
He quickly sucked down those 8 ounces and was his happy little self. We were given our discharge instructions and were on our way by 1230 that afternoon. Dr. Tanaka made us an appointment for 6 weeks but said that if we feel like there aren't any problems and we have no questions then we wouldn't have to come back to her office.
We were sent home with some pain medication and instructions to take the bandage off after 3 days if it hasn't already fallen off by then. We only gave him his pain medication once. We used ibuprofen the rest of the time and on Friday his bandage came off and we were able to bathe him. He had a couple of stitches but they have since dissolved. He is still swollen but getting better and it has not slowed him down one bit! We are so thankful the the staff and OR team at Vanderbilt! They do amazing work there!
